$20 for $40 Worth of Japanese Cuisine

The lunch menu includes combinations such as barbecued eel with unagi sauce, miso soup, salad, and two pieces of Atlantic-salmon sashimi ($18), or a teriyaki-chicken burger with miso and yam fries or a salad ($8). During dinner, meals begin with appetizers such as seared ahi tuna salad ($7) before moving on to entrees such as beef-short-rib skewers cooked on the traditional robata grill ($8). The extensive sushi menu is home to specialty maki such as the fried Cajun stuffed with spicy shrimp, avocado, mango, and mango mayo ($9.75). Koiji also serves sake by the glass ($5) or bottle ($18+) and imported beers such as Sapporo and Kirin ($6+).

At Koiji Restolounge, chefs slice, roll, and sear a lineup of traditional Japanese cuisine and contemporary fusion dishes, from slabs of tender sashimi to teriyaki-slathered burgers. Inside the dining room, a tall white banquette runs along one wall, and tables fill with plates of skewered yakitori chicken, pan-fried sockeye salmon, and tiny airplanes delivering flavours from Japan. Sushi chefs craft each maki cylinder to order, filling rolls with ingredients such as barbecue eel or slicing buttery toro sashimi to drape over pearls of rice.
