The Canadian Forces has a rich history, so why not rediscover all the victories, tragedies and sacrifices on your own time? Experience life at the helm in a Second World War wheelhouse, walk through a First World War trench and witness a bomber squadron’s mission over enemy territory with today’s TeamBuy: $10 for admission for two to The Military Museums.

The Military Museums’ (TMM) $18.5 million capital expansion and renovation has seen the facility grow from 52,000 sq ft to 104,000 sq ft, making it the second largest military museum in Canada. The expanded facility is now tri-service and includes the relocated Naval Museum of Alberta, the newly-created Air Force Museum of Alberta. All of The Military Museums are dedicated to showcasing Canada’s navy, army and air force history and educating the public about Canada’s military. With today’s Buy you also get access to special events held at the museums, like the upcoming Afghanistan: A Glimpse of War, in the Founders’ Gallery, which showcases March 6 to July 4. The exhibit moves beyond the headlines to show compelling photos, video footage and first-hand accounts of Canada’s participation in the war in Afghanistan. Based principally on photographic and video records captured by Canadian journalists Stephen Thorne of The Canadian Press and Garth Pritchard, a freelance documentary filmmaker, during several of their visits to Afghanistan, this exhibition provides a glimpse of an unfinished history. The exhibition is on loan from the Canadian War Museum.

You might also like to zoom in on the Calgary skyline through a submarine periscope. The Naval Museum of Alberta recently installed the periscope after it was removed from Her Majesty’s Canadian Submarine OJIBWA. The 44-foot (13.4-metre) artefact is part of an impressive collection. Unlock the secrets of the Enigma machine in the Battle of the Atlantic display. The Air Force Museum of Alberta is also a great place to visit, and opened at TMM on May, 7, 200, featuring two theatres. One is a to-scale interior model of a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft as used by today’s Air Force and the other is housed in a period Nissen hut showing a typical Second World War pre-mission bombing briefing. The Museum recently launched Brothers in Arms: A Story of two Alberta sons in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Quite popular, in 2010, TMM had approximately 62,000 visitors. The 2010 Remembrance Day Service was attended by approximately 12,000 Calgarians. In addition, more than 10,000 schoolchildren tour TMM annually as organized class groups. The Military Museums’ education programs are tied in with Alberta’s provincial education curriculum and have won both provincial and national awards of excellence. In 2010, The Military Museums received the Innovation Award from the Alberta Museums Association for the education program “Canada and the Cold War.”

The Military Museums offers a wide variety of educational programs, activities and tours to both school groups and the general public. To book a tour through the education department please visit the website. Click ‘learn’ and follow the links.
