Melissa’s Missteak Restaurant, or Mel’s, has been a favorite of locals since it opened in the late 1970s, but its building’s history dates all the way back to the early 1900s. Between 1913 and 1919, a local businessman built the Homestead Hotel, a temperance house that didn’t sell any alcohol. But it changed owners in 1919 and almost immediately changed its alcohol policy, including getting an addition with a tavern in 1930.
Melissa’s made its home in the original Homestead Hotel building, which features log walls and thick log poles holding up 35-foot-high vaulted ceilings.
According to the owner, Melissa’s is the most popular during breakfast, which starts at 7 a.m. and goes until 4 p.m. During dinner, chefs sizzle up Alberta beef and British Columbia salmon.
