Market Collective is a series of festivals that celebrate local artists by inviting them to share their music and handcrafted goods with the community. According to the Calgary Journal, each artist is selected based on the quality of their work and their proximity to Calgary. After all, the mission of the project is to support local commerce, which festival attendees can do by browsing the festival’s expansive selection of clothing, jewelry, toys, and other handmade items.

The music aspect of the festival grew out of years of house shows hosted by the festival’s founders. These events led to local musicians playing at the festival. These musicians can be heard throughout the day, filling the spacious Chinese Cultural Centre with tunes that draw on everything from bluegrass to electronica.
