When most people travel oversees, they usually just come back with souvenirs and overlong descriptions of the in-flight movies they watched. Laura, however, came back with a passion. While vacationing in Sweden in 1990, she discovered a knack for capturing the country’s lush landscapes and native people on film. So, when she returned to Calgary, she enrolled at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology for photojournalism. Her ensuing degree led her toward a decade-long career with Swedish newspapers and, eventually, a successful run freelancing for a slew of Canadian periodicals and publications. In addition to being featured in a variety of gallery shows, her work has graced the glossy pages of Canadian Geographic magazine, the Toronto Star, and Vancouver magazine, to name a few.

But once she had her baby in 2011, Laura discovered another form of photography that she enjoyed just as much as on-the-field editorial work: portraiture. She was so taken with snapping photos of her little girl that she decided it was only natural for her to also aim her lens at babies and families. It turned out to be a good move—she now helms professional portrait sessions that yield retouched prints, canvased images, and high-resolution digital files. She also passes on her accumulated expertise during workshops that teach others how to photograph their own young’uns.
