$175 for a PADI Open-Water Diver-Certification Course ($375 Value)

PADI-certified instructors guide new scuba divers through two phases of the PADI open-water-diver certification course. To complete the program, divers need to register for PADI’s eLearning course, which costs an additional $138 (not included). This virtual classroom—which can be accessed from a computer, tablet, or smartphone (not compatible with Apple products, Google Chrome, or Safari)—covers scuba essentials such as how pressure affects the body and how to plan dives, all while preparing students for quizzes on the subject matter. Divers then head over to the pool to assemble their diving gear and complete a pre-dive buddy-safety check, before entering the pool to breathe underwater for the first time. Instructors teach all necessary skills, such as how to clear water from a mask, equalize ears, and remove a leg cramp.

After completing the five confined pool dives and all eLearning work, students and instructors lug their air tanks to a nearby body of water. In a controlled environment, students dive into real-world conditions during four open-water dives, which cap off the requirements for certification. Participants must be at least 12 years old, able to swim 200 metres, and able to tread water for 10 minutes. Four open water dives must be redeemed before end of diving season on October 30.

A group of seasoned, affable, and PADI-certified scuba diving instructors staff Caribbean Dreams Diving, which offers personalized programs for training would-be underwater explorers of all skill levels. In-pool dive training is available for every age bracket starting with 8-year-old tadpoles. Once you’ve gained some experience, instructors can help you prepare for Open Water certification, sans floaties, at some of the area’s most beautiful and lucid bodies of water, including Forgetmenot Pond and Lake Minnewanka.
